DNB Radiodiagnosis(Secondary) from Kerala institute of medical sciences, Trivendrum kerala- My experience

By Dr.Pavan Kumar In OTHERS Posted September 23, 2018

Dr Dhanya vivek is doing  DNB Radiodiagnosis(Secondary) from  Kerala institute of medical sciences, Trivendrum kerala

What is the cutoff rank for your college?

I am a secondary candidate. My rank was 5 and my colleague rank was 13.

No of residents/batch?

3 primary+3 secondary = 6 per batch

What are the usual working hours?

Working hours are from morning 8 am to evening 6/ Morning 10am to night 8pm.

It is about 10 hours every day.

Sunday/ one week day is holiday.

How frequent do you get emergency duty/24 hour duties? Is there any post duty ""off""?

Monthly 4 or 5 night duties.  Post night off is there, but on night duty we need to report CT and MRI and can leave the hospital after settling the reports with consultants.

What do you do as 1st year, IInd year and IIIrd year?

A lot of USG, CT and MRI exposure

Enough of OBS usg you can do, especially  if u are a female you will get more postings in obstetric ultrasound.

Rotations- There is no fixed rotation. It all depends on our luck. For me, every alternate month I had USG and then CT,MRI. We get alternate month in CT and MRI during 5-8pm timing. But if there is shortage in one modality we have to go there and work. Secondaries get more time in CT and MRI and less time in Fluroscopy

The only problem in KIMS  Is you won’t get time for reading and family.

Is there any useless work for residents?

Nothing.

What are the different modalities available?

a)XRay

b)USG- OBS, abdomen and local. 2 Machines are there in obs, one for resident.

c)CT scan

·         Multiphase Contrast studies with 64 slice CT Scanner

·         CT Volumetry for Liver and kidney using Terarecon Workstation

·         Whole body CT Angiography and Venography

·         CT Enterography and CT Colography

·         CT Cisternography, Myelography

d)PET SCAN MR IMAGING

·         Characterizing Hepato-biliary and Pancreatic Lesions, splenic, adrenal, peritoneal, retroperitoneal and GI masses

·         Focal liver lesion characterization with dedicated protocols and Liver specific MR Contrast media

·         MR Cholangiopancreatography (MRCP)

·         MR Angiography, Enterography

·         PACS integration of all modalities.

·         MRI Brain Spectroscopy for characterisation of brain lesion

·         Body MRI – for characterisation of lesion in chest, Abdomen & Pelvis

·         Musculoskeletal MRI – Imaging of joints andmuscles including MRI Arthrography

e)INTERVENTIONAL RADIOLOGY – 2 months posting

How much is the stipend for Ist year, iind year and IIIrd year?

For primary it is 43,44,45k for first, second and third year respectively. For secondary it is 44k and 45k for first and second year.

How  frequent are seminars/PGP?

It is there, but not much

How is the accommodation?

Hostel facility is available

Anything else you have to say?

For a secondary it is pretty good institute to learn, but if you want a peaceful life with family for 2 years do not opt here.
